Playing in the Sandbox

I thought I would post a short photo tour of my recent "Vacation" to Iraq. It started out by leaving my cute family at Hill AFB and getting on this chartered plane.

Once I arrived at Al Udeid Air Base we were herded onto a C-17 Globemaster. I was happy to be able to sit in a side row Jumpseat with plenty of space.

Getting off the plane at Balad Air Base. Now called Joint Base Balad.

I was assigned to the 332nd Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron. Can you see me? Of course not I was in my bed asleep when this picture was taken!

My Room

I worked from Noon until Midnight 6 days a week with this group from Syracuse NY Air Guard.
It's amazing we didn't kill each other!

A nice day at Balad!
135 Degrees!

A not so nice day at Balad!
Still over 100 degrees!

On Sundays before church I would volunteer at the Base Hospital helping at the Helicopter Pad.

This is me standing in front of a Counter Rocket and Mortar (CRAM) gun!

(Little white dome thing)

Happy to be leaving Balad even if it is in the back of a C-130.

Getting off the C-130 at last at Al Udeid Quatar.

Tent City Qatar.

I'm happy I got the one on one explanation already. I still can't believe that place.

Sounds like a nice "vacation"! I love that you call it that. I can totally sense the sarcasm. I'm glad that you made it back safe. I love the picture at the top of your blog with the boys holding a light saber and a sword. How cute!

Thanks for the play by play. It's good to know how "wonderful" it really is over there...
